Mosquitoes are flying insects capable of biting humans to withdraw blood to nourish the insect to keep it alive. Most mosquito-caused deaths around the world are due mosquitoes that are infected with malaria and pass it on to the humans that the mosquito bites. In general, malaria has been eradicated in the U.S., but mosquitoes still spread dangerous diseases such as the West Nile virus or other dangerous diseases. The female, not the male, actually bites the host, because it needs protein to produce her eggs; and the males prefer instead to sip on nectar.

How female mosquitoes feed is no mystery. The female uses her needle-like proboscis to pierce the skin of the host, inject her saliva (which triggers an immune response that keeps the blood flowing) and suck out blood. That mosquito spit is what makes you itch; and it’s also what spreads disease. Many people don't realize that in the middle stage of mosquito development, they are not able to eat.
